The Vernacular Modern (earlier known as woodlabs) is design studio working closely with an ever growing community of artisans who truly believes in holding on to the our vernacular wisdom and craft with an intent to bring back this knowledge as a part of our everyday living. 

The aim is to revive simple practices which are concious and sutainable to our surrounding, without compromising modern luxuries of life. 

At its core, "The Vernacular Modern"  draws its inspiration from profound connection to its cultural heritage, blending it with thoughtful creativity. 

Founded by Abhirup Dutta, an architect and product designer based in Bangalore, and Deeptashree Saha, an interior designer, and stylist hailing from Calcutta, Woodlabs is a homage to artisanal values and a slower, more intentional way of life.

Abhirup Dutta's inspiration stems from his grandfather's renowned "karkhana," a workshop celebrated for repairing and retrofitting components of Satyajit Ray's film cameras.

On the other hand, Deeptashree Saha brings her extensive experience in art, architecture, and the aesthetics of an evolving vernacular setting to the table. Her humble childhood growing up in a developing town allowed her to observe the transition in vernacular fabric.

Her education and subsequent work allowed her to hone her passion for the spaces and sharpen her
aesthetic as a collector and connoisseur of rural craft. This journey allows her to find a balance between traditional vernacular taste and modern aesthetics.

Together, they lovingly craft each piece with a generous amount of time and care.
